The following are answers to Frequently Asked Questions about SharePoint.
What is SharePoint?
SharePoint is Microsoft's answer to portal and collaboration software. It is a architecture framework that lets you build web portals to share information amongst your organisation in an efficient and timely manner.
The main attraction to using SharePoint is its ease of use - if you can use Microsoft Office products such as Word, Excel and Powerpoint then you can easily use SharePoint within your organisation.
What are the difference between the versions of SharePoint?
SharePoint has three main versions -
Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) which is a basic portal and collaboration set of tools that will probably suit 80% of your information sharing needs. WSS has the following features:
- Document Management - up to 500,000 documents
- Content via email
- Basic Search
- Alerts
- RSS feeds
- Wikis
- Blogs
- Mobile device support
- Direct integration with Office 2003/2007
Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) Standard is slightly more complex and has the following features:
- Unlimited document repository
- My Site Personal Sites
- Additional web parts such as Social Networking and Document Roll Ups
- Search capabilities across various other systems
- People search
- Workflow support
- Support for ASP.Net authentication
- Single Sign On
Finally there is Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) Enterprise which adds additional functionality such as:
- Excel Services
- Business Intelligence
- Business process and business forms support
- Business data search
- Integration with Trim
How can I get SharePoint for my organisation?
SharePoint technology extends Windows Server 2003, so if you've already got a Microsoft Windows 2003 server within your organisation you will be able to set up WSS without any cost on that.
Alternatively if you don't have your own server you will need to engage a third party SharePoint hosting account. We can organise this for you so if you don't have your own server then please contact us.
